The most mystical of them all, tongue piercing has been connected with altered state of mind in many cultures. A way to enter a trance, or in Dervish tradition and indicator that a trance and been achieved.
From swords and needles run through it, to fluorescent plastic pieces of today, tongue piercing came long way.
Comedian Chris Rock once joked that “if a girl shows you her tongue piercing she wants to suck your dick… if a guy does the same… he wants to suck your dick” I don’t know if this is true… but I do know that kissing someone with tongue piercing does take some getting used to, and it is incredibly arousing.
Perhaps it is this aspect of arousal, and endearing that led old cultures of Maya and Aztec to believe that tongue piercing will appease gods, give the shaman better means of communicating with the divine and increase the spiritual power of a person.
One thing is for sure – this particular type of piercing is bloody damn sexy.
But is it safe?
Strangely enough, very much so, as tongue is an amazing organ that heals incredibly quickly, and mouths intrinsic antiseptic ability helps this process…
Lip piercing on the other hand was a symbol of beauty… sure, what ribes of old found pretty certainly is different from what we see today as beauty, but the history of lip piercing as a diverse and long one.
In Africa, Malawi tribes use Pelele discs to stretch their lips into oblivion, but this practice has been found in both South America, and some Asian tribal cultures, although it’s main propagators were Mesoamerican tribes and tribes of central Africa.
